'CABE SLAMS…' is becoming an all-too familiar headline, but its latest report on the quality of PFI schools should make architects sit up and take notice.

Five hundred schools have now experienced life under the initiative, from total rebuild to minor refurbishment, and the government has invested a further £1.2bn in 43 projects currently at planning or procurement stage. With this amount at stake, CABE wants to ensure that the result is lasting, quality design.

'I don't think you'll find that doing PFI makes anyone's life happy', says Richard Feilden, CABE commissioner and principal of Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, but he adds that architects have to face reality. The PFI is here to stay: 'We can't wash our hands of the process, we have to engage in it and make it work as well as it reasonably can.'

There are, of course, benefits - the first and foremost being that, after years of under investment, new schools are finally being built. Most head teachers are happy with their new premises, as CABE's reports on nine PFI schools discovered, but their response is unrelated to the long-term
design implications of the building. When the commission

Vodafone is developing a new concept of mobile phone shop that it believes can give it the edge in selling the next generation of wireless technology.

Charity to launch campaign
Shelter is launching a DM campaign to highlight the dangers faced by people who live in sub standard rental accommodation. The mailing, created by WWAV Rapp Collins, features a case study of a 19-year-old woman who died because of a carbon monoxide leak in her gas fire. It explains that support for people at risk from bad housing is one of its priorities, and asks for a regular gift of £2 a month or a cash gift of £15.

Vodafone: preparing for advent of 3G by developing new retail concept
(source: Marketing, 07/03/02)

The world's biggest mobile phone company has briefed a number of retail design specialists to come up with proposals to overhaul its 360 strong chains of UK stores.

Vodafone want to find new ways of engaging shoppers in the rollout of third-generation phones, and to explore new customer services methods that will increase revenue from its subscribers.

It is considering stocking stores with a range of product beyond its core mobile offering.

BBC 4 is sponsoring all 50 of the wooden benches on the South Bank and 22 concrete benches outside the Royal Festival Hall in London, to reinforce its association with arts culture. The 250mmx75mm stainless steel plaques were produced by Poster Publicity's in-house production company Hi-Resolution and sponsorship was arranged by Tranzformer and PHD.

A trial store will open in June on the site of one of Vodafone's shops in the home counties. "This will be a test bed to trial different approaches including new styles of service," said a spokes woman. "We're seeing how we can better interface with consumers and get closer to them. It is all about us selling our service and our products."

Vodafone's announcement comes as mobile phone ownership approaches saturation point in Europe. The introduction of 3G phones later this year is expected to create a new wave of demand. Meantime, network operations are focusing on maximising revenues from their existing base. Rival Orange already operates the 'Orange studios', a single outlet in Birmingham offering a wider service including a café and internet access. Last September Vodafone handed its UK ad agency WCRS the task of marketing its branch network.
