Dome
Sports Academy plan revealed by
Steven Palmer |

| The
European Commission is working on plans for a pan-European policy on
the energy performance of buildings. Brussels officials are consulting on a directive which would create a common method for calculating performance across member states and would set minimum standards which would also be applied to existing buildings. (Source: Building Design, 07/12/01) |

Foster
& Partners is designing two city academies in London in a return
to secondary education buildings for the practice. |
"Weve
talked about the Dome and its potential uses for ages - we started work
on this concept last year. This scheme will open the site up to the public
for free - ours is the only scheme that will do that," said Young.
There has already been a high level of support from the leisure industry for the S&P design. Young told the AJ that the Lawn Tennis Association, diving associations, cinema groups and a number of other interested leisure organisations were all "really up for it". (AJPlus.co.uk, 11/12/01) |

Cabe eyes lottery Powers |

The Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment is locked in talks with the Arts Council about taking over its architecture department - a move that could hand the design watchdog significant new powers over the destiny of £86 million in lottery grants. |

|
Vodaphone
has
appointed Octagon UK to create a global marketing communications program
and a series of events aimed at leveraging the mobile phone giant's sponsorship
of the Ferrari Formula One team. |
The
council's architecture advises on the design quality o bids for lottery
cash for buildings and is influential in the recommendations that are
made to the executive board for approval.
The ongoing talks could lead to these powers being handed to Cabe and the council's architecture function being wound up altogether. A Government source has said: "Jon Rouse is discussing with the Arts Council what the sensible thing to do with architecture at the Arts Council is. Does it make sense for there to be a division of responsibility? |

BAA
is launching a promotion to encourage people to visit London over the
Christmas & New Year period. The scheme, devised in conjunction with
Airport Express, allows customers to park their car in any short-term
car park at Gatwick, Heathrow or Standsted after 5pm for a flat fee of
£5. The promotion is designed to boost tourism within London. |
"A
decision may be about Cabe taking over both the Arts Council's cultural
role in architecture and its advisory role on lottery capital projects,
or just one of them." |
